A thought to remember: Horse Show was large part of fair

“Highland Madison County Fair Association was organized in 1898, and they held fairs at Lindendale Park for almost 20 years. (Reread my column of May 6 for more details.) With the advent of Prohibition in 1918, the county fair was discontinued, as it was no longer profitable. Then, when Prohibition was repealed in 1933, in 1936 a new Madison County Fair Association was started and the fair was held at Lindendale Park in the fall of 1936. One of the big attractions was a horse show, on the ball park area, where the wooden grandstands were available. The horse show became a money maker for the fair.
