  • Man says its clear Keystone pipeline muddied his pond

It’s the place in the country many dream of one day owning. Mark Reaka’s part of Americana is 5.7 acres near Grantfork that boasts thick tree lines, a small pond, and if you are there at the right time of the day, the chance to catch a glimpse of red foxes, turkeys and deer. The land has been in Reaka’s family for more than six decades. But this pristine setting has recently been soiled — literally. Reaka says his new neighbor, TransCanda Corporation’s Keystone Pipeline, is to blame.

Lady Bulldogs use full-court press to run away from Indians in the fourth quarter

The Highland girls basketball team headed into the fourth quarter holding a precarious 35-31 lead over Carlyle Thursday night in their season opener at the Salem Lady Wildcat Thanksgiving Tournament. Coach Matt Elledge decided to change things up and slap a full-court press on the Indians. The ploy worked as Highland forced Carlyle into turnovers and the Lady Bulldogs made them pay at the other end with layups to run away from the Lady Indians 17-4 in the frame en route to a 52-35 victory.

Window is crown jewel in Highland Chamber building upgrade

The half dozen or more people standing in the street looking up at the Chamber building last Friday weren’t watching for birds, or planes, or Superman for that matter. But there was plenty of excitement nonetheless, as they observed the culmination of a building face-lift that began early last year — the installation of a gorgeous stained glass window.
