A 21-year-old East St. Louis man was charged Tuesday afternoon with three counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths Saturday night of three women.

Milton Lattimore was charged in the deaths of Jaimaca McDaniel, 24, Tenikia Harvey, 27 and Raykel N. Gathing, 26, all of East St. Louis.

Lattimore, who is believed to have been the ex-boyfriend of McDaniel, is being held at the East St. Louis jail with bail set at $2 million. He was arrested Sunday in St. Louis.

The women were gunned down as they sat with three children in a Dodge Caliber at a gas pump at a Crown Food Mart in East St. Louis. Police have said McDaniel had been talking to the suspect over the phone before the shooting. Family members said McDaniel recently broke up with Lattimore, who was the father of two of her children.

Associate Judge Richard Aguirre arraigned Lattimore via closed-circuit television Tuesday afternoon, telling him he faced the possibility of the death penalty or a sentence ranging from 20 years to life in prison depending on how heinous his crimes were judged. Lattimore replied in a low voice "yes, sir" and "no, sir" to the judge's questions about whether he understood the charges and possible penalties.

Aguirre said he was entering a "not guilty" plea on Lattimore's behalf and that a public defender would be appointed.
