A Highland woman was killed Sunday after her car collided head-on with a van on Illinois 4 near Fruit Road, which is north of Marine.

Patricia A. Ross, 56, was driving her Chevrolet Cobalt south on Illinois 4 when she pulled into an opposing lane and hit a northbound Ford Aerostar driven by Marcial G. Escamilla, 28, of Decatur, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Joe Leach said.

A pickup truck and another car ahead of Ross were waiting to turn left onto Short Road, and had paused to allow Escamilla's van to pass, Leach said. When Ross tried to pass or avoid rear-ending the car in front of her, she crashed her car into the oncoming van.

Emergency personnel responded at about 7:48 p.m. Ross was pronounced dead at the scene.

Escamilla had minor injuries and was not hospitalized. Both were wearing safety belts.
