A seven-week-old infant was found alone in a Shiloh apartment Saturday when police arrived to conduct a well-being check on the child's mother.

The child's mother, Kristal M. Patton, 25, of 2326 Rockwood, was found deceased in the apartment, according to Shiloh Assistant Police Chief Gary McGill.

Police had been called and asked to check on Patton because she had not been seen or heard from by a friend for some time. The apartment manager let police into Patton's home.

The St. Clair County coroner estimates Patton had been dead for 48 to 72 hours before her body was found.

The child was found in a crib in the apartment and was taken to Belleville Memorial Hospital. The child was later transferred to Children's Hospital in St. Louis and was listed in stable condition Monday afternoon.

The cause of death of Patton has not yet been determined, pending a toxicology report, but police do not suspect foul play was involved in her death.
