The fourth annual Kids of Discovery Day will be held Saturday at the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site in Hartford.
The event is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Children can join the Junior Corps of Discovery and participate in military drills from the early 1800s U.S. Army. They can also test their ability to navigate by compass and map, learn about life in a military camp, pull the weight of a boat on land and learn to make rope or a bead necklace. All candidates who participate in the Junior Corps of Discovery will receive a journal to chronicle their hard work and receive a certificate of enlistment into the Junior Corps of Discovery at Camp River Dubois.
The Lewis and Clark State Historic Site is administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. It is open seven days a week for free public tours, and is located just north of I-270 along Illinois 3 at the intersection of New Poag Road.
