Baseball draft includes more local players

Edwardsville High outfielder Dane Opel was drafted in the 41st round Thursday by the Washington Nationals, while two McKendree University players also were selected.

Opel, a Missouri recruit, went to the Nationals with the 1,222nd overall pick. McKendree standout and former Greenville High star Cale Johnson went to the St. Louis Cardinals in the 41st round at No. 1,239.

McKendree pitcher Nolan Martz, a Roxana High graduate whose father, Randy Martz, pitched in the major leagues, was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the 47th round with the 1,406th overall pick.

Marion High left-hander and Vanderbilt recruit Nathan Dorris was chosen by the Atlanta Braves in the 45th round with the 1,348th overall pick.
