Mascoutah will get $650,000 to expand the city's fiber optic system Internet connectivity, U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello, D-Belleville, stated in a Thursday news release.

The funds are part of the U.S. House of Representatives' Commerce-Justice-Science Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2010, according to Costello, a senior member of the House Science and Technology Committee.

Costello stated that the funds will allow city departments, schools and businesses better access to the Internet. He said the funds also will enhance communications capabilities, which will improve public safety and foster economic development.
