The metro-east baseball community earned a big honor this week when O'Fallon High catcher Nick Tindall and Edwardsville High outfielder Dane Opel each were selected to the 2009 Louisville Slugger High School All-American Baseball Team.

Both were first-team selections; the awards were announced by Collegiate Baseball magazine.

Tindall, who signed with the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday after being drafted in the 17th round, was one of nine catchers in the country to make the first team.

Tindall had a .492 average with 14 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs and 64 RBIs.

Opel was drafted by the Washington Nationals and also has a scholarship from the University of Missouri. He was one of 13 outfielders selected to the first team and hit .447 with seven doubles, three triples, 18 homers and 62 RBIs.

Former Highland High star and Milwaukee Brewers first-round pick Jake Odorizzi was the Louisville Slugger Player of the Year in 2008.
