Officials are conducting an investigation into the death of a 74-year-old Alton man found at a parking lot Wednesday morning.

An autopsy showed that John R. Christian, of 20 Marian Heights Drive, Apt. 313, "suffered extensive cardiac arrest," and there was no evidence of foul play, according to a news release from the Madison County coroner's office.

Christian was found at 6:01 a.m. Wednesday next to his car in the parking lot of his apartment building. He was pronounced dead at 6:53 a.m. by coroner investigator Todd Ballard.

"Because of the unattended nature of the decedent's death in an outdoor area, an autopsy was conducted this afternoon which revealed that the decedent suffered extensive cardiac disease," according to the news release. "No evidence of foul play was observed. Routine toxicology tests will be performed."

The Alton Police Department also is investigating.

Information on funeral arrangements were not immediately available.
