The National Weather Service in St. Louis issued a flash flood warning for several counties in Illinois, including Bond, Marion, Clinton and Washington counties.
The warning is in effect until 11 a.m. Saturday.
Thunderstorms with heavy rainfall are expected to continue to develop and move east across the state. Many areas had already received 2 to 3 inches of rain before 10 a.m. Saturday.
Run-off from the excessive rainfall is expected to cause flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas near creeks or streams.
