Big generator to mosey through Lenzburg next week

The first piece of a new generator under construction at the Prairie State Energy Campus in rural Washington County will arrive Monday and travel through the area at 1 mph.

The generator part weighs 443 tons and is 35 feet long, 19 feet and two inches wide and 17-feet, 8-inches high. It will arrive Monday by barge on the Kaskaskia River and will travel 14 miles at 1 mile an hour.

The path will begin down Pike Sawmill-Baer Road, then left on Baldwin Road, right on Schaller Road, left on Winter Road/Main Street, right on Illinois 13, left on Lenzburg East Road, right on Illinois 4 and left on New Marigold to the 1,600-megawatt, coal-fired power plant under construction near Lively Grove. The trip will take two days.

The first leg of the trip will go through the Village of Lenzburg, where IDOT has installed steel plates to protect underlying water and sewer pipes. The village of 600 residents has called a meeting for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lenzburg Community Center, 215 N. Charles St., to spread the word about the move.
