Illinois bands place at weekend marching band competition

ST. LOUIS - Several metro-east bands placed in the Greater St. Louis Marching Band Festival this weekend.

Ten Illinois bands participating in the annual event at Edward Jones Dome on Saturday, placed into four categories according to the number of students in the band, not including color guard.

In the blue category, none of the Illinois bands placed.

In the red category, Collinsville High placed third and Normal Community High placed fifth.

In the silver category, Edwardsville High placed fourth.

In the gold category, O'Fallon High placed third and Belleville East placed fifth. The top band in the gold category was Kickapoo High School from Springfield, Mo.

Bands from Sparta, Murphysboro, Granite City, Alton and Mater Dei Catholic high schools also participated.

About 5,000 students participated in the competition, with 14,000 in the stands.
