An Alton man and woman who were babysitting three children were charged Monday after police said they found drugs and hypodermic needles at the residence.
Justin L. Hazelip, 25, of 916 Torch Club Road in Alton, and Stephanie L. McMahan, 17, of 3952 Torch Club Road in Alton, each were charged with felony unlawful possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor child endangerment and misdemeanor unlawful possession of hypodermic needles, Madison County Sheriff's Department Capt. Brad Wells stated.
Deputies responded at 9:15 p.m. Friday to the 600 block of East Chain of Rocks Road in Granite City to reports of a possible overdose. When they arrived, they learned that McMahan had been taken to the hospital.
Hazelip explained to deputies that he and McMahan were babysitting three children at the home. Deputies then found hypodermic needles and a substance that tested positive, Wells said.
Hazelip is being held in the Madison County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.
McMahan was treated and released from the hospital. She is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
The parents of the three children were contacted to return to the residence.
