Illinois State Police wrote 56 citations and warnings Friday during a roadside safety checkpoint in South Roxana.
The checkpoint was set up at Illinois 3 and New Poag Road, according to Illinois State Police Master Trooper Ralph Timmins.
Included in the 56 citations were three arrests for driving under the influence, seven open alcohol violations, nine drivers license violations, two seat belt violations and eight arrests for active warrants.
"The roadside safety check is a valuable tool to encourage voluntary compliance," said Illinois State Police District 11 Commander Jerry Culp. "The roadside safety check is designed to encourage the motoring public to comply with valid licenses, valid insurance, occupant restraint, and not having open alcohol in a vehicle. The three DUI arrestees now face court time, possible fines and suspensions, even Breathalyzer ignition interlock devices and the fees that accompany them."
Some of the roadside safety checks are funded through a grant from the United States Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety.
