Driving school opens in Granite City

A new instructional driving service in Granite City is now teaching teens and adults and helping them get their license.

Advance Driving School recently opened at 2725 Madison Ave. Owner Mary McCoy said that in addition to traditional classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction, her school also regularly hosts guest speakers from local police and fire departments to complement the program. Linens 'n Things will remain open at 6005 N. Illinois St. in Fairview Heights. On Friday, the bedding- and home-furnishing retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware and announced it would close 120 of its 589 stores that were underperforming. Almost a quarter of those stores that are closing are in California. Company spokeswoman Susan Kenney said that the lagging economy, credit crunch and sluggish housing market contributed to the New Jersey-based company's decision. ...

And finally, Kurt's Carstar at 1 Mueller Drive in Maryville will host an event to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Area business are encouraged to donate $100 to purchase a "car" that will compete in one of 10 six-car "races" determined by rolling six dice. Each time one of the dice indicates one of the six cars in the race, that car moves forward one space. The first "car" to advance 10 spaces is the winner. More than $6,000 has already been raised for the event. The race is sponsored by Boogies at 2082 Vadalabene Drive in Maryville. The event is co-sponsored by Maryville Pharmacy at 2700 N.
