Put aside the question of why two former police commissioners would sue the East St. Louis mayor and city manager for alleged discrimination that didn't happen to them.

Focus instead on the serious allegations that Wyatt Frazer and Della Murphy make in a lawsuit: that East St. Louis Mayor Alvin Parks refused to hire a former Illinois State Police executive as the city's top cop because he was white. Parks hired instead Michael Baxton, who later resigned over criticism of his poor handling of homicide investigations.

Give credit to the Rev. Johnny Scott, head of the East St. Louis Chapter of the NAACP, for calling for a federal investigation. The public deserves to know if Parks put prejudice above public safety.

As Scott said, discrimination against any race is wrong. It also would be illegal.
