When doctors take the Hippocratic Oath, they promise to do no harm to their patients. So when the Illinois State Medical Society warns that the health care reform proposals in Congress could do great harm to Americans, we all should sit up and listen.
Specifically, the group opposes:
* Government-mandated treatment guidelines.
* A government-subsidized "public option."
* A single payer system.
* Further expansion of Medicaid.
"You should not be forced to accept a health system that wastes money or reduces quality and access to care," the group stated in a full-page newspaper ad.
Critics will say the doctors are looking out for themselves. Of course they are. Still, we'll trust their judgment on health care over the judgment of lawmakers like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She and some of her fellow Democrats seem much more intent on winning this political fight than enacting meaningful reforms. Passage of a bill has become all about control, not about compassion for people without health insurance.
The goal was, and continues to be, access to affordable health insurance coverage for all. Why should we believe that Congress' plan will provide it?
