In 1892, the city of Highland started its first electricity service and is still the supplier of electricity for Highland and much of the Highland area. So, let’s return to early Highland.
“Dr. William W. Everett was born in Scott County, Ill., in 1856. With the start of the Civil War, his father, Andrew Jackson Everett, moved the family to Marine and enlisted in the Union Army in 1862, and served until 1865.
The early post offices of Highland were in the building belonging to the postmaster. Most of the early postmasters were merchants, and they wanted the extra traffic to come to their store when the people picked up their mail. Another reason was the postmaster’s salary wasn’t great, ...
