Fix broken VA system

On Monday, America honored its war dead. Unfortunately, the nation is doing a horrible job of honoring veterans who are living and depend upon the Department of Veterans Affairs for their medical care.

In recent years there have been many reports of substandard care and long waits at government-run medical facilities, including at John Cochran VA Hospital in St. Louis. Politicians act outraged, call for hearings and say the situations are unacceptable, but the problems keep recurring.

Now at the VA hospital in Phoenix, 40 veterans may have died while they waited to get appointments. Administrators there and at other hospitals have been accused of shredding records and keeping two sets of books so it looked as if veterans were getting timely treatment.

President Obama is "madder than hell," according to a spokesman, but words mean little. Obama has been expressing outrage about poor care that veterans receive since he ran for president in 2008.

The public is fed up with empty words. What matters are the actions -- or inactions -- of Obama and his administration.
