Police seek help solving fatal hit-and-run in Granite City

Police are asking for the public's help in solving a fatal hit-and-run late Thursday.

Granite City police found the body of Jack W. Hoppe, 35, on the bike trail approximately 100 yards north of Victory Drive and Terminal Avenue on Friday morning.

It is believed that Hoppe was struck sometime between 9:40 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday. Granite City Police declined to give further details on what might have happened.

"There is a time period for reporting a hit-and-run, and we are hoping that the person responsible will come forward before this window of opportunity closes," said Capt. Darin Clements of the Granite City Police Department.

The Madison County Coroner's Office referred questions to Granite City police.
