Wine, Dine and Jazz features food trucks and tribute bands

Organizers of Belleville's Wine, Dine and Jazz festival are taking a cue from Sauce Magazine, which has had great success with its Food Truck Fridays at Tower Grove Park in St. Louis.

Food trucks will offer ethnic and gourmet choices at the festival on Friday and Saturday, everything from Japanese to Brazilian, German to Cajun.

"It's not food that you would find at a carnival -- the corn dogs, the cotton candy, the funnel cakes," said Patti Gregory, executive director of Art on the Square, which sponsors the festival. "It's more upscale."

Festival hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday around Veteran's Memorial Fountain on Belleville's Public Square.

Admission is free. People can listen to live bands and purchase food and wines from around the world, as well as craft beers.

"We're encouraging people to bring their lawn chairs," Gregory said, noting that picnic seating also will be available.

"It's just a really fun event. It's a great way to get your friends or neighbors together and come downtown and relax."

Festivalgoers will buy tokens to purchase wine. The cost is $10 for the first glass (in a souvenir glass to keep), $5 for subsequent glasses or $1.25 for samples.

Bo Hill, the festival's entertainment director, has hired a variety of jazz bands to attract all age groups.

"We've got three tribute bands this year," he said. "They seem to be pretty popular."

Those bands are Hey, Nineteen covering Steely Dan; Carlos (with Ralph Butler) covering Carlos Santana; and Pete Ruthenburg covering Herbie Hancock.

The music lineup also includes Kingdom Brothers (blues) and Zena Star (singer-songwriter with combo).

"Son Montuno is a Latin jazz band," Hill said. "And then the Soul Cafe Jazz Group ... They do a little bit of everything. I'm not sure how to classify them."
