It's a nightmare scenario for residents of nursing homes and their loved ones: A nurse hired to care for patients instead is accused of stealing their medication and neglecting them. Not just at one but at two separate nursing facilities in St. Clair County.
The state is going to hold a disciplinary hearing to determine whether to revoke the license of that nurse, Nicole Banuelos, of Mascoutah. If the allegations are true, the obvious answer is "yes." There's too much danger of her bouncing from job to job and this happening over and over again to unsuspecting residents.
A St. Clair County judge has already told her not to practice as a nurse while her criminal case is pending, but the public shouldn't have to trust that an accused lawbreaker will follow those instructions.
Now when people look up Banuelos on the state website, it lists her license as active and that she has never been disciplined. That listing needs to change so she's not a potential threat to patients in the future.
