The Canal Motel on Chain on Rocks Road in Granite City is one of those trouble spots that usually cause public officials to shrug their shoulders and change the subject.
Everyone knows about the long history of drug problems at the motel, but so far, no one has been able to find a permanent solution.
Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons hopes to change that. He has filed legal action under the drug asset forfeiture laws to take control of the Canal Motel and the Relax Inn on Niedringhaus Avenue, another drug hot spot.
Seizing property is a drastic, last resort, but that's what can happen when efforts to resolve the problems "pleasantly and affirmatively" have failed.
We won't predict how this saga will end, but it's clear that Gibbons has the owners' attention at last. He also has the thanks of the public for taking decisive action.
