POPPY DAY: VFW Post 1739 will conduct its Poppy Day drive Friday and Saturday at various stores in Belleville.
Proceeds from the drive assist disabled veterans and veterans in distress, and help veterans hospitals.
ORCHESTRA AUDITIONS: The Saint Louis Philharmonic Orchestra will host auditions for all orchestral sections. Auditions will be Wednesday at St. Louis Community College at Meramec.

ALL THINGS CHOCOLATE: Christian HomeCare Services, Inc. announced that the annual All Things Chocolate event will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 27 at Hidden Lakes Winery in Aviston.
A silent and live auction will be offered. The silent auction ends at 3:30 p.m.; the live auction begins at 4 p.m.
Music from Acoustic Feedback will be from noon to 4 p.m.

OPEN HOUSE: University of Missouri at St. Louis observatory will host an open house at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Richard D. Schwartz Observatory, off Florissant Road and Rosedale Drive, St. Louis.
Participants will be able to see Jupiter, Ring Nebula, Alberio and Hercules Cluster.
The event is free. In case of inclement weather, the open house will be at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 30.

The entry fee is $20 in advance or $25 from 7 to 8 a.m. on the day of the race.

GOVERNMENT BARBECUE: The 2009 government officials barbecue will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 17 at the St. Clair County courthouse in Belleville.
The cost is $40 per person and covers the cost of one member and one government official.
The event is sponsored by the Bank of Belleville.

ADOPT-A-PET: Benld Adopt-A-Pet is having an adoption event from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the O'Fallon PetsMart, 1570 W. Highway 50, O'Fallon.
There is a reduced adoption fee of $50 for cats, kittens, adult dogs and most puppies.
All available animals are spayed/neutered, have all shots and have had worm treatment.
COUNTRY CONCERT: Tickets are on sale for the annual country concert and dance to benefit the Good Samaritan House, a homeless shelter for women and children.
The concert will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Knights of Columbus, 4225 Old Alton Road, Granite City. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger.
