What qualifies you for this position?
“I have served the district as president, vice president, chair of finance and policy committees and board member. My law and business backgrounds I have found to be helpful. I am a graduate of the University of Illinois with a B.S. in business administration and a Juris Doctorate.”
What is the top issue in your race, and how would you address it?
“School funding. The challenges facing the board are multifaceted. The first and foremost is school funding. This is reflected in the state’s withdrawal from funding for public education. Illinois is failing its future with the lack of commitment to school funding. I spoke to this at all of the board meetings since my reappointment. Funding to District 7 has steadily declined. Proration of committed funds is a constant problem as well as late payment of money owed by the state. Judy Barr Topinka, prior to her death, stated that failure to keep the higher income tax and corporate tax rates would lead to a ‘heart attack’ for the state’s budget. The problems facing the state are profound. Illinois ranks last in its percentage contribution to secondary education. Through smart budget plans and revenue enhancement this board has managed to maintain the second lowest tax rate for a school district in Madison County.”
