What qualifies you for this position?
“I grew up in Granite City and have lived here for 65 years. My family have homes here. We would never live anywhere else. Granite City schools and their excellent teachers and staff propelled me, my husband, and my sons to higher education. That education changed our lives and opened the doors not only to middle class economic opportunities, but also to a stronger future for us moving forward. As a taxpayer here for 39 years and an active voter, my primary interest is children, because the future of District 9 will determine the future of my grandchildren.”
What is the top issue in your race, and how would you address it?
“Granite City schools are facing a financial crisis. Student programs, extra-curricular activities and class sizes are being threatened if our Tax Referendum doesn’t pass. The No. 1 issue is: How to reduce spending and costs while protecting both curricular and extracurricular student programs? Where will cuts occur? Administrative salaries are inflated and have steadily risen. With ‘Common Core’ looming, we have no single individual dedicated to curriculum, which will align us with State Standards. We also have no single individual responsible for writing grants which will increase revenue. The district’s curriculum needs consistency from kindergarten through graduation.”
