Boy Scouts want your new or used shoes!

Lewis & Clark Council, Boy Scouts of America, is conducting a shoe drive in an effort to collect 25,000 pairs of shoes for Soles4Souls.

You can bring new or used shoes to 335 West Main St. in Belleville between Sept. 1 and 11, the National Day of Service.

Soles4Shoes is a global not-for-profit institution dedicated to fighting poverty. All shoes will be refurbished in Third World countries to help create a mirco-economy, then will be returned to benefit youth is need in the metro-east.

Participation is simple, according to the council:

1. Clean out your closet.

2. Bring new and used shoes to the Lewis & Clark Council Service Center between Sept. 1 and 11.

For sponsorship opportunities, contact Travis Briner at 618-207-6444 or email

Jay Tebbe, publisher of the Belleville News-Democrat, is chairman of the drive.
