EAST ST. LOUIS -- A 3-year-old was shot in the hand and his guardian was shot in the back early Sunday after a man kicked in the door to their home.
The boy and man were shot at 1:48 a.m. Sunday at 1010 Sycamore St. in East St. Louis, according to East St. Louis Police detective Marion Riddle. The boy is in serious condition but is expected to recover. The 48-year-old man was being treated at a regional hospital and is also expected to recover, Riddle said.
The victim told police he was in the house when the suspect kicked in the door and started shooting. Riddle said he believes the man was holding the boy. Riddle did not have a motive or suspect.
Illinois State Police are assisting East St. Louis Police on the case. Anyone with information is asked to call East St. Louis investigators at 482-6700, state police at 346-3990 or CrimeStoppers at (866) 371-8477. Calls to CrimeStoppers can lead to reward money and can be kept anonymous.
The shooting report came in as East St. Louis Police were still on the scene of a triple murder. Three women were shot to death while sitting in their car with two children at the Food Mart on Collinsville Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive in East St. Louis.
East St. Louis has had 27 homicides this year.
