A 33-year-old East St. Louis man was sentenced to more than 9 years in prison Friday after pleading guilty in July to a gun charge.
Deleone Murphy pleaded guilty July 17 to possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon. He also was fined $500, ordered to pay a $100 special assessment and to serve three years supervised release after completing his prison sentence.
Deputy U.S. Marshals stopped a vehicle March 6 in which Murphy was a passenger and recovered a gun from where he had been sitting. The investigation was aided by the federal Burea of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the St. Clair County State's Attorney's office in participation with the Project Safe Neighborhood initiative. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Angela Scott.
