Cahokia students to perform at Shakespeare Festival in St. Louis
The Cahokia High School Drama Club will perform this weekend at the Shakespeare Festival of Greater St. Louis.
Drama Club sponsor Rebecca Carriel said 10 schools from the St. Louis region will each perform acts of Shakespeare plays. Cahokia's students will participate in "Richard III."
The free performances will be at 7 p.m. Friday and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday at Xavier Hall, 3733 West Pine Mall, at St. Louis University.
Carriel said Cahokia is the only metro-east school that was invited to participate in the festival. ...
David Kaiser has won Freeburg Community High School's 2008 TRIG-STAR award.
A TRIG-STAR is a mathematics student who has demonstrated in competition that he is the most skilled among classmates in the practical application of trigonometry. The competition for the honor is a timed exercise that involves solving trigonometry problems that incorporate the use of right triangle formulas, the law of sines and the law of cosines. The contest helps to promote careers in surveying and mapping to students at the many high schools across the United States.
David, a senior, is the son of Jim and Lori Kaiser of Freeburg. He won $50 for first place, while fellow Freeburg High senior Josh Jennings, son of David and Colleen Jennings of Freeburg won $25 for second place.
The award is sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors, the Illinois Professional Land Surveyors Association, and it is co-sponsored locally by Rhutasel and Associates. ...
More than 700 students will be participating in the second annual Renapalooza Festival on Friday at Belleville West.
The carnivallike event is designed to celebrate students who receive an A and B grades, Principal Bob Dahm said. There will be carnival rides and games along with the U.S. Marines pull-up contest and karaoke. The event will be from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. ...
Fulton Junior High School, in O'Fallon, will hold its annual fine arts show Thursday.
"The halls of Fulton will have magically turned into a fine arts gallery," teacher Suzy McDaniel said.
Student work will be on display from all art students in McDaniel's and Suzie Stotler's classes. Art Club members also will show their creations. A highlight of the night is "Spotlight," a selected group of eighth-grade students who have shown dedication and passion to art.
New this year is interactive art, where children of all ages can create their own art, McDaniel said.
The art show lasts from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., the Fulton Junior High Choir, conducted by Jeannine Moeller, will perform. ...
Brooklyn Community Unit School District 188 will hold a meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday to discuss a proposal from Midwest Partnership Through Academic Excellence to open a charter school in the district.
The meeting will be held at the district office board room at 800 Madison St. in Brooklyn, and residents can attend to learn more about the proposal.
