Soil was contaminated in late 19th and early 20th centuries by leaking coal tar byproduct from former Belleville Gas Light & Coke Company. Ameren assumed responsibility when it bought Illinois Power in 2004. Project should wrap up in early 2019.
A 25-year-old Granite City woman, Billie J. Cottle, is facing charges that she allowed a 17-month-old child, identified only as "A.G.", to ingest fentanyl and methamphetamine in her presence, causing him to become unresponsive. The child is now in the custody of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
