A 41-year-old man from New Baden injured in a motorcycle crash was in critical condition at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis as of Wednesday morning, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Jason Stillwell was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after his motorcycle crashed on Illinois 4 shortly before midnight Sunday, according to Illinois State Police.
Stillwell was driving north around 11:40 p.m. just south of Interstate 64 when his motorcycle left the roadway, Trooper Calvin Dye Jr. said. A preliminary investigation indicated the man drove around a curve too fast, hit a curb and lost control of the vehicle, Dye said. Stillwell was thrown from the motorcycle.
Stillwell was not wearing a helmet, Dye said. He was taken by ambulance to Memorial East Hospital with severe head injuries. From Memorial East, he was flown to Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
Motorcyclists are not required to wear helmets in Illinois, though helmets are required by law in Missouri.
