A group of musical professionals in Canada has apparently shut down after reaction to an email from management saying vocalist members needed to be “fit and slim,” the Toronto Sun reported.
A Toronto woman who says she has worked with the Sheraton Cadwell Orchestras for about five years said she received the email Monday evening.
“It has been brought to our attention that although almost all of our vocalists are fit and slim — the way our boutique orchestras would like our front line performing artists to be — two of our featured singers were not,” read the email that Sydney Dunitz received.
The email specified only vocalists needed a fit-and-slim appearance or loose-fitting clothing, because “instrumental musicians ... are essentially background wallpaper.”
Parts of the company’s website were not available Friday, but the home page said the group incorporated in 1991 and provides musicians for weddings and other events in Toronto.
Management of the group has since resigned, and the organization appears to be disbanded.
