A man witnesses say was fleeing from police Friday drove into a wall of cement blocks and flipped over, trapping himself in the vehicle.
Witnesses said the man drove away from Family Dollar at a high speed after being pulled over by police and swerved into the Associated Bank parking lot at 6902 West Main Street. Belleville Fire Battalion Chief Dave Zahn said he was unsure if the man was fleeing from police.
Edward See, Izhail Hoffman and Jayden Mullaney, students at Belleville West High School, said they saw the man’s truck flip several times before coming to rest in a patch of grass near the bank and Ace Hardware.
Kenny Wosten, who works at Associated Bank, said he and his co-workers rushed out to the overturned truck and tried to pull the man out of the car. Wosten said the driver was unconscious.
The man was driving his pickup truck west on Main Street at about 4:15 p.m. Friday, and lost control of the vehicle, causing him to cross over into the eastbound lane and hit the cement planter, Zahn said.
Belleville police did not have any further information as of 6:15 p.m.
