Coastal watches or warnings in the Leeward Islands could be in effect as early as Sunday night because of Hurricane Irma, the National Hurricane Center says. Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic could be in the path of part of the storm.
The Category 3 hurricane is swirling in the Atlantic and expected to turn west Monday and gain strength in the next couple of days.
Some so-called spaghetti models of the storm – named for the various paths that it could take – show inland activity into the Midwest. Other models show it well east of the East Coast. The National Hurricane Center updates its forecast several times a day.
