Authorities said a report Wednesday of an armed man at a county building in downtown Belleville were unfounded.
A man was seen being taken into police custody downtown at about the same time Wednesday afternoon, but it was unclear whether his being taken into custody was connected to the report of an armed man.
Authorities later said the reports of an armed man were mistaken, and that there was no danger. The reports had indicated that an armed man was at 19 Public Square in Belleville
Police arrived in that area after receiving a call from a person at the building saying a man was inside and had a gun.

Police at the scene declined comment. St. Clair County Sheriff Rick Watson said the matter was under investigation.
KMOV reported that some type of wooden handle was somehow mistaken for a gun.
