Pickup driver airlifted to hospital after striking freight train

A pickup truck slammed into the side of a freight train on East Chain of Rocks Road, trapping the driver who was cut out of his vehicle and flown by helicopter to a St. Louis Hospital.

"He was conscious and breathing," said Illinois State Police Sergeant Jeff Snyder about the mishap that occurred about 5 a.m. Saturday.

A witness said that the driver's 2006 Dodge Dakota struck the northbound train about 30 cars from the engines and was destroyed.

The railroad crossing is operated by the Alton Southern Railroad but information was not available as to the identity of the train.

The victim's name was also not available.
