June 5Ks, other races in the metro-east

As the weather heats up, so does the summer running season. Here's a roundup of some 5-kilometer (and longer) runs and walks during June in the metro-east:

The Royal 5K Holy Run

7 a.m. June 7

St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 2300 Pontoon Road, Granite City


The event is part of St. Elizabeth's picnic. All participants will be entered in a drawing to win a Michelob Ultra bicycle.


Thin Mint Sprint

7:30 a.m. June 7

Camp Chan Ya Ta, Worden

$35 for 5K Trail Run; $60 for 5K Obstacle Course; $70 for both; $18 for kids 5K Obstacle Course Fun Run

The 5K Trail Run and 5K Obstacle Course benefit the Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois. Sign up for both events and be titled a "Tough Cookie."


Miles for Miles 5K/1M walk

8 a.m. June 7

Everett Moody Park at Longacre, Fairview Heights

$25 for the 5K; $15 for 1M (day-of registration)

The inaugural event benefits the Miles Brumfield II Education Fund and the Heartlinks Grief Center.


The Root Race 5K

8 a.m. June 7

Woodland Park, Collinsville

$20; $15 for seniors older than 55; $10 for children younger than 12

This family friendly 5K is part of the International Horseradish Festival.


Marica Pruett Run for Your Life 5K

9 a.m. June 7

Monroe County YMCA, 9514 Caring Way, Columbia

$18 for YMCA members; $23 for nonmembers

The timed run in honor of Pruett, who motivated others to get involved in fitness.


Tri County Superhero Run/Walk

9 a.m. June 7

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

$30 for adults; $15 for children ages 6-12; free for children younger than 5

All proceeds from the 5K run/walk and 1-mile fun run will benefit CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Southwestern Illinois, which supports abused and neglected children in St. Clair, Monroe and Madison counties.


Neon Dash

9 p.m. June 7, Gateway Motorsports Park

700 Raceway Boulevard, Madison

$50 before June 4; $55 after June 4

Neon Dash is a 5K fun walk/run that begins at dusk and invites participants to walk, run or dance their way through four ultra-violet neon color zones.


Schweizerfest 5K Glo-Run

8:30 p.m. June 13

Route 40 and Frank Watson Parkway, Highland


The Highland Jaycees are holding the second annual 5K Glo Run. Proceeds benefit local charities.


Coordinated Youth and Human Services 5K

8 a.m. June 14

Wilson Park, 2900 Benton St., Granite City


Proceeds from the event will benefit The Complex Youth Center in downtown Granite City, which provides after-school and weekend activities for youth free of charge.


Route 66 10K Run and Walk

8 a.m. June 14

Edwardsville City Park and Library, 112 S. Kansas St., Edwardsville

$35; $40 on race day

The 10K is put on by the Metro Milers running club as part of the City of Edwardsville's Route 66 Festival.


Covered Bridge 5K

5 p.m. June 14 Covered Bridge, Glen Carbon


The 5K is held in conjunction with the Glen Carbon Homecoming festivities. Run the Covered Bridge 5K in the afternoon after running the Route 66 10K in the morning and receive a special award for the "Goshen 5 and Dime Challenge."


Granite City Police Department Jailbreak 5K

8:30 a.m. June 21

Civic Park, 20th Street and Delmar Avenue, Granite City


All proceeds go directly to Backstoppers, which provides financial assistance to first responders killed in the line of duty.


Monroe County Fraternal Order of Police 5K and 1/2 Mile Fun Run

8:30 a.m. June 21

409 MAR Graphics Drive, Valmeyer

$20 if postmarked by June 13; $25 after June 13

All donations benefit the Monroe County FOP scholarship fund.


Mental Health Walk for Awareness - Race for Recovery

9 a.m. June 21

GCS Ballpark, Sauget


The untimed fun 5K run and 1 mile walk aims to promote understanding of mental illness and to fund resources to strengthen and support individuals and families in the healing process.


5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run

6 p.m. June 21

Marissa Township Building, 221 E. Mill St., Marissa

$30 for 5K; $15 for 1 Mile Fun Run

All proceeds will go toward the medical bills of Phyllis Hunt, who is battling colon cancer.


Summer Solstice 2.5 Mile Run

7 p.m. June 21

Silver Lake Park, Highland

$5 donation; $15 for donation with shirt

Celebrate the beginning of summer and take advantage of the longest day of sunlight while supporting the Highland Parks and Recreation Department and the Angel Fun.


Swansea Fire Department Light the Night

8:30 p.m. June 21, Swansea

$20; $10 for Kids Fun Run

The event features a "glow stick lighted course." All proceeds benefit the Swansea Firemen Civic Association.


Red Bud Firemen's Dash

7 p.m. June 27

Design Fitness, 146 W. Market, Red Bud

$25; children age 11 and younger are free

This 5K color walk/run supports the Red Bud Volunteer Fire Department. Along a 5K path, you will be covered with different colors.


Cheering Up a Sweat 5 and 10K Run/Walk

7:30 a.m. June 28

Firemen's Park, Maryville

$25 through June 15; $30 after June 15

The event is sponsored by the Collinsville Unit 10 Cross Country team. All proceeds will go toward participating metro-east sporting teams. The event will feature a special appearance by Rams Cheerleaders.
