Breese police: Suspect in fatal hit-and-run in custody

A suspect has been arrested in the hit-and-run death of a 23-year-old woman whose body was found Sunday on the roadside in Breese, according to police.

"A person of interest (is) in custody," according to a press release issued Thursday morning by the Breese Police Department. The suspect's name was not immediately released.

"He (suspect) is being cooperative at this time and the investigation is continuing. Once more information is known, the appropriate formal charges will be filed," the statement said.

Authorities said Clinton County prosecutors had taken the case under advisement. At the close of business Thursday, no charges had been filed at the Clinton County Courthouse.

A woman who answered the door Thursday evening at the suspect's home in Damiansville said the family had no comment.

The body of Lana E. Albert, of Edwardsville, was found just off old U.S. 50 in Breese, according to Clinton County Coroner Phillip Moss.

The area where her body was found is about 250 yards from the Big Stix Sports Bar & Grill, where Moss said Albert was last seen with friends.

Breese police received reports about 2:13 a.m. of a woman walking in and out of traffic on old U.S. 50 on the west side of Breese.

An earlier news release from Breese police stated that when officers arrived they found a woman's body that appeared to have been hit by a car.

Albert was on the cheerleading and cross country teams when she attended Odin High School in Odin, about 30 miles east of Breese. Friends said she was a fun-loving, vivacious woman who was a graduate of a dental assistance program and worked at a dental office in Glen Carbon.

Ray Albert, the victim's father, said he was informed early Thursday of the arrest by Breese Police Chief Bob Fix.

"I want to thank Chief Fix and the whole Breese Police Department. I appreciate what they did on this," he said. "I know they did a full-court press on this."
