Committee to open bids for new Moody Park playground

The Fairview Heights Parks and Recreation Committee will open bids Tuesday from those wanting to provide new equipment for the playground at Moody Park at Longacre.

The committee has received four bids. Parks and recreation district director Angela Beaston said the committee will officially open the bids and spend the next week reviewing them before the committee meets again to select the winning bid. That bidder will then be forwarded to the City Council, which will need to approve the selection before the project can begin.

Beaston said the city has budgeted $377,000 from capital improvement funds for the fiberglass playground equipment that will be built on a rubberized surface. It will replace the former wooden structure that was built atop mulch just north of the pond.

She said the new equipment could be assembled within a week, and further landscaping and new sidewalks will take about four to six weeks to complete. She anticipates the new playground could be open to the public by August.

"The equipment is not going to take that long to put up -- takes about a week. However, it's going to take longer get all of the concrete for the sidewalks and retaining walls. We have to wait until the equipment is up," Beaston said. "It takes about a week. Then, we can put in the sidewalks."

The former wooden playground was built in 1995. Beaston said that because the wood had splintered and had caused injuries, the park district had it dismantled in November.

Meantime, work will begin on preparing the landscape.

"We hope to begin excavating and you'll start seeing things start changing," Beaston said. "Sometime next week we'll start working on excavating the land. So we're going to start leveling things out to get ready for the equipment."

The parks and recreation committee will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in Fairview Heights City Hall.
