Kaskaskia lock and dam named for Congressman Costello

The Kaskaskia lock and dam near Modoc has been renamed after former U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello, a Belleville Democrat, according to a statement issued by his successor, U.S. Rep. Bill Enyart, D-Belleville.

Enyart led an 18-member U.S. House delegation from Illinois to rename the lock and dam in Costello's honor.

The authorization to rename the facility came with President Barack Obama's signing last week of the Water Resources Reform and Development Act.Enyart sponsored the renaming legislation in December 2013.

Costello, 64, won an August 1988 special election to the 12th District seat after the death of Melvin Price. Before that election, Costello had served eight years as chairman of the St. Clair County Board.

Costello, an influential member of the House Transportation Committee, retired from the House in January 2013.

Costello's most important work as a House member involved the improvement of infrastruture in the St. Louis metro region, according to Enyart.

"After 25 years of service to Southern Illinois, Jerry's work can be seen across each county, through his tireless efforts to bring top of the line infrastructure to the region," Enyart said.

An official dedication ceremony to rename the lock and dam is set for September.
