The vice president of the District 7 school board has resigned, leaving a vacancy on the board.
Brad Hewitt announced his resignation at the school board meeting Monday after nine years of service.
Hewitt informed the board that his job at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville will require more travel in coming years, and he would be absent too much to be appropriate serving the district.
Hewitt currently serves as director of intercollegiate athletics for SIUE, which recently became a Division I school in the NCAA.
Hewitt is also moving outside the school district, which would make him ineligible for serving on the school board.
"Brad has served the community with distinction for over nine years and has been a visionary and proactive member of the board," said board president Jill Bertels, crediting Hewitt's role as finance chair with much of the district's navigation through difficult financial times. "We will miss him very much and wish him the best."
Hewitt said that the committed families, children and staff of District 7 are part of what makes Edwardville "a community of choice."
The District 7 board has 45 days to select a replacement for Hewitt on the board. A public notice will be placed in local media and those interested will be interviewed, according to Bertels.
The person selected to fill Hewitt's seat would serve until the next election in April 2015. The winner of that election would fill the remaining two years of Hewitt's term, which expires in April 2017.
Anyone interested in applying should send a letter to Bertels at 708 St. Louis St., Edwardsville, IL 62025. The applicant must be 18 years or older, a U.S. citizen, resident of District 7 and Edwardsville Township for at least a year, a registered voter and not a school trustee or treasurer.
