Aldi wants to build new grocery store in Belleville

Grocery store chain Aldi has applied for a zoning permit to build a new store at West Main Street and Frank Scott Parkway in Belleville, across from Althoff High School. The proposal goes before the city's zoning board on Thursday.

Aldi also has stores in Swansea, O'Fallon, Cahokia, Collinsville, Glen Carbon Granite City and Wood River.

Another grocery plans on building a store in Collinsville. Ruler Foods, which is owned by Kroger, is under construction at The Orchards shopping center on Illinois 159. Ruler Foods is also building a store in Belleville at the northwest corner of 17th Street and North Belt West, at the former Bel-Air Bowl site.

LaQuinta Inn plans to open a hotel and add a pool at 6 Gateway Drive in Collinsville. The existing building had been home to Microtel Inn and Suites before the business went into foreclosure.

Construction is underway on a Little Caesars Pizza at Collinsville Crossing, located off Illinois 157. The $800,000 two-bay building will provide Little Caesars with walk-in and drive-through service in one bay and another retail spot next door.

Tiger Plumbing is moving from Glen Carbon to Collinsville. The plumbing business will soon relocate to 1902 Vandalia St.

An e-cigarette retailer has opened its third metro-east store in Caseyville. Green Forest Vapor Shop has opened its doors at 1101 Caseyville Road, Suite E. You can also find them at 106 E Main St. in Belleville and 742 N Market St. in Waterloo. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday. Find out more online at

Rent A Center has recently moved from Fairview Heights to Belleville. You can now find the rent-to-own store at 2A Bellevue Park Plaza. The number is 618-233-9330.

There are more details about a new business coming to Edwardsville. Unkle Munkey's Coin Club will open soon at 1027 Century Drive, where customers will be able to order sandwiches and beverages from the bar and play dozens of arcade games. The place will have 50 coin-operated arcade games and 12 pinball machines. Find out more online at

And finally, congratulations to the folks at the Illinois Center for Autism for more than two decades of serving adult clients through the work experience the center provides through its Pasta Fare Italian restaurant and for the past 11 years at the Petals Remembered floral shop. The autism center operate both and staff it with their 46 adult clients who learn responsibility and gain independence. The Italian restaurant opened in 1992, 22 years ago this month. The flower shop opened next door in 2003.

By the end of this week, the autism center will continue both businesses at the same shopping center, but as a consolidated operation. Both will operate from the same storefront at 5900 N. Illinois St., where the same food will be prepared for carryout and catering and made-to-order flowers will be available for purchase.
