Coroner: Cardiac event caused metro-east car crash

A "fatal cardiac event" is blamed for the death of a Godfrey man who crashed his car Sunday afternoon in the parking lot at the Farm and Home Supply Store in Alton.

Joseph M. Welch, Jr., 61, suffered only superficial lacerations in the collision with a tree. X-rays revealed no significant internal injuries caused by the impact, according to Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonn.

It was determined that Welch had a history of cardiac health disease and that he told people Saturday that he was feeling dizzy.

The crash happened at 3:12 p.m. and Welch was pronounced dead at Alton Memorial Hospital at 3:55 p.m. No one else was hurt in the accident.
