Give the air conditioner a break -- unseasonably mild weather is here

The weather will be as spectacular as the fireworks as the metro-east nears the Fourth of July holiday.

* The high temperature Wednesday will be 76 degrees under mostly sunny skies. It will be partly cloudy overnight with a low of 55.

The average high temperature for the first week of July in the metro-east is 89 degrees. Two years ago the area had a very different stretch of weather. From July 3-7 in 2012, new records for the high temperature were set each day. It was 101 on July 3, 105 on July 4-5, 106 on July 6 and 107 on July 7, according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.

Still, the metro-east is a long way off from the lowest high temperature for this time of year. On July 2, 2001, the high temperature reached was only 56 degrees. The record for lowest high temperature on the Fourth of July in the St. Louis area is 52, set in 1940.
