Victim of fatal crash identified; police say driver fell asleep

A Benton woman was identified as the victim fatally injured in an early Monday morning car crash

Diana M. Reginato, 44, was a passenger in a 2009 Pontiac G6 driven by her daughter, Nichole Reginato, 26, of Eldorado, according to Illinois State Police reports.

Illinois State Police Trooper Calvin Dye Jr. said alcohol was not a factor in the cause of the crash. Police believe the daughter fell asleep but is investigating this aspect, Dye said.

The car left Illinois 4 and crashed into a tree between Blue Spruce Lane and Kirsch Road, which is between Troy and St. Jacob.

Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn said Diana Reginato was wearing a seat belt at the time of impact. She was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital in Highland due to neck trauma.

A passer-by saw Nichole Reginato walking in the road and reported the accident to authorities at 2:06 a.m., Dye said.

Nichole Reginato, who was also wearing a seat belt, was airlifted to a hospital in St. Louis for treatment. Dye said she remained in critical condition on Monday but, according to Nonn, her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Illinois 4 was closed to motorists for several hours.
