Westbound lanes on the Chain of Rocks Bridge will be open this week, the contractor reports, but not as soon as previously said.
Westbound lanes of Interstate 270 over the Chain of Rocks Bridge will be open Friday, not Wednesday. The contractor on the job, Walsh Construction Co. of Chicago, notified the Illinois Department of Transportation of the change.
IDOT project engineer Barry Gibbs said contractors are finishing up the tie-ins between the old and new road. Westbound lanes had been expected to be open in August.
Eastbound lane restrictions will continue with work being done overnight. Gibbs expects the whole Chain of Rocks Bridge to be open to traffic by the end of September, as scheduled.
The old Chain of Rocks Bridge will be demolished soon after the new bridge is opened.
