Granite City woman charged in beating death of 82-year-old dad

Madison County prosecutors on Friday charged a 54-year-old Granite City woman with first-degree murder in the beating death of her 82-year-old father.

States Attorney Tom Gibbons accused Diane S. Kelly of beating Woodrow Dilday repeatedly with a metal bar Thursday "following an exchange between the two of them."

She was being held without bail at the Granite City Police Department and was expected to be taken to the Madison County Jail.

Gibbons said Dilday's wife -- Kelly's mother -- was in the home when Dilday was killed. She was not injured.

"Elder abuse comes in many forms, and unfortunately, it can often end tragically, as it has in this instance," Gibbons said. "I want to express my sympathy to the family of Woodrow Dilday. It's heart-breaking to have to deal with the violent death of a loved one and even more so when it comes at the hands of another family member."

Gibbons said Kelly hit her father "multiple times" with what was described in the charges only as a metal bar. Police found him on the floor of his home, with obvious head injuries.

Granite City Police said they received a call about 3:30 a.m. Thursday about a dead person in a home in the 2800 block of Harding Avenue. There, police said they found a scene suggesting Dilday was the victim of a violent crime.

Coroner Steve Nonn said Dilday died of blunt-force trauma to the head.

Gibbons said Kelly faces 20 to 60 years in prison if convicted.
