17-year-old charged as adult in shooting death of teen in Madison

A 17-year-old teen will be charged as an adult in the shooting death of 16-year-old Malik A. Garrett, according to Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons.

Craig D. Miller, of Lovejoy, was charged Monday with two counts of first degree murder and a count of aggravated discharge of a firearm. Miller allegedly fired into a crowd that included Garrett and three other men around 5:15 p.m. Friday, July 11 at Sammy's Market in Madison.

Garrett was the only one shot, hit three times in the chest and abdomen. Witnesses say Miller and Garrett had an ongoing dispute.

Garrett, of Venice, was still alive when police arrived on the scene but died about an hour later at Gateway Regional Medical Center.

If convicted of murder, Miller faces up to 60 years in prison. He remains in custody at the Madison County Juvenile Detention Center in Edwardsville. Miller is being held without bond.

Gibbons offered his condolences to the family of Garrett.

"It is certainly tragic when a young man is murdered in such a violent manner," Gibbons said. "The swift arrest by our local law enforcement shows that this type of senseless violence in our neighborhoods will not be tolerated."
